It's under development as a future product for an Israeli company called Deep Optics. They claim their smart contact lens will cost “roughly $25/contact lens to create, whereas based on Google’s public disclosures, their’s will cost around between $200-300 per lens“. The CEO, Harry Gandhi, is a Thiel Fellow which means that Peter Thiel gave him $100,000 to drop out of college and run with this idea. Quinn also believes that drug delivery may be another use for future contact lenses. If a lens could dispense medication slowly over long periods of time, it would be better for patients than the short, concentrated doses provided by eye drops, he says. The most basic function of contact lenses—improved vision—would be the cornerstone of any smart lens. Multifocal contact lenses and lenses that treat migraine headaches from Orion Vision Group are already on the market; lenses that respond to external stimuli are next.
